Why see Carmen at the Arena di Verona

Georges Bizet's Carmen is one of the most performed operas in the world — a four-act drama of desire, jealousy and fate set in the sun-baked streets of Seville. Its free-spirited heroine, who answers to no one but her own heart, draws the soldier Don José toward ruin, while the smouldering Habanera and the swaggering Toreador Song have become some of the best-known melodies ever written.

Heard in the open air at the Arena di Verona, Carmen takes on the scale only this ancient Roman amphitheatre can give it: a full orchestra and chorus, monumental staging and thousands of voices under the summer sky. It is grand opera as spectacle, in one of the most atmospheric venues on earth.

Arena di Verona

One of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres anywhere, the Arena di Verona has stood at the centre of Piazza Bra for nearly two thousand years. Since 1913 its curved stone tiers have formed the world's largest open-air opera house — and on a summer night, as the sky darkens and points of candlelight spread across the ancient steps, few stages anywhere feel as alive.

Getting there is simple: Verona Porta Nuova station, with fast connections to Milan, Venice and beyond, is about fifteen minutes on foot, and the historic centre around the Arena is largely pedestrian. Much of the seating is on the original stone steps — the gradinata — so many visitors bring or hire a cushion and arrive early to watch the amphitheatre slowly fill.

Franco Zeffirelli’s Carmen at the Arena di Verona

The 2027 season brings back Franco Zeffirelli’s celebrated Arena production, created on a scale suited to one of the world’s largest opera stages.

Instead of relying on a minimal backdrop, the staging presents a lively Seville populated by soldiers, cigarette-factory workers, smugglers, dancers and crowds gathering for the bullfight. Large scenic structures, colourful costumes and extensive ensemble scenes make the production visually impressive even from the elevated seating sectors.

Direction and set design are by Zeffirelli, with costumes by Anna Anni, lighting by Paolo Mazzon and choreography by El Camborio. The production also features the Compañía Antonio Gades alongside the Fondazione Arena di Verona Orchestra, Chorus, Ballet and technical teams.

One of the Arena’s Most Popular Productions

Carmen has repeatedly attracted large audiences at the Arena di Verona. Three performances of Zeffirelli’s production in 2025 welcomed a combined audience of approximately 30,000 people and sold out, demonstrating the continuing popularity of both Bizet’s opera and this particular staging.

With ten dates available in 2027, visitors have more opportunities to include the opera in a summer trip to Verona. However, Friday and Saturday performances may be especially attractive to international travellers planning a weekend around the city or nearby Lake Garda.

The Story of Carmen

Set in Seville, the opera follows Carmen, a woman determined to preserve her freedom regardless of the consequences.

After being arrested following a fight at the cigarette factory, Carmen persuades the soldier Don José to help her escape. He abandons his responsibilities and becomes increasingly consumed by his feelings for her, but Carmen eventually turns her attention to the celebrated bullfighter Escamillo.

Don José’s love develops into jealousy and desperation. Outside the bullring, while the crowd celebrates Escamillo’s triumph, Carmen refuses to surrender her independence or return to her former lover, leading the story towards its tragic conclusion.

Famous Music from Bizet’s Carmen

Carmen contains some of the most recognisable music in opera.

The Habanera introduces Carmen’s uncompromising view of love, while the Seguidilla reveals how easily she can manipulate Don José. Escamillo’s entrance brings the famous Toreador Song, and Don José’s Flower Song provides one of the opera’s most lyrical and emotional moments.

These familiar melodies make Carmen a strong choice for first-time opera visitors, while the psychological conflict between Carmen and Don José gives the work sufficient depth for experienced audiences.

Language, Subtitles and Duration

Carmen is sung in its original French. Italian and English subtitles are provided, allowing international visitors to follow the dialogue and story during the performance.

The estimated running time is approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes, including two intervals. Visitors should therefore plan for the performance to finish shortly after midnight.

The principal singers and conductors assigned to individual 2027 dates have not yet been announced. The cast currently remains listed as forthcoming, so specific performers should not be presented as confirmed until the programme is updated.

Choosing Your Carmen Arena di Verona Seats

Central stalls provide the closest view of the principal singers, costumes and dramatic interaction between Carmen, Don José and Escamillo. These seats are suitable for visitors who want to observe expressions and individual performances in greater detail.

Elevated sectors offer a broader view of Zeffirelli’s immense set, large crowd scenes and choreography. For a production designed on such a monumental scale, a slightly raised position can provide an excellent overall perspective.

The Arena offers padded numbered seats in the stalls as well as numbered places in the historic stone-step sectors. Always check the precise seating type and location before completing your booking.
