Madama Butterfly (Madame Butterfly) is an opera by Giacomo Puccini in three acts (originally two acts) with Italian lyrics by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. It is based on John Luther Lang's short story 'Madame Butterfly' (1898), which in turn was based on a story told to Lang by his sister Jeanne Correll, and Pierre Lotti's 1887 The semi-autobiographical French novel 'Madame Chrysanthemum' was adapted. Long's version was dramatized by David Velasco as the one-act play Madame Butterfly: A Japanese Tragedy, which moved to London after its New York premiere in 1900, and Pucci Ni in that year.
The original version of the opera in two acts premiered on February 17, 1904 at La Scala in Milan. Despite starring famous singers such as soprano Rosina Storcchio, tenor Giovanni Zenatello and baritone Giuseppe De Luca, it received a poor reception. This was partly due to Puccini's late finish, not having enough time for rehearsals. Puccini modified the opera, splitting the second act into two parts, the humming chorus forming the bridge to the third act, and making other modifications. The success started, starting with its premiere in Brescia on May 28, 1904.
