Carmen is a dramatic opera in four acts with music by Georges Bizet and Regia Franco Zeffirelli and libretto in French by Ludovic Halévy and Henri Meilhac, based on the novel Carmen by Prosper Mérimée, first published in 1845, which in turn was possibly influenced by Aleksandr Pushkin's narrative poem The Gypsies (1824). Mérimée had read the poem in Russian in 1840 and translated it into French in 1852.
The story of Carmen is set in Seville around 1820, and stars a beautiful gypsy with a fiery temperament. Carmen, free with her love, seduces Corporal Don José, an inexperienced soldier. Carmen's relationship with the corporal causes him to reject his former love, mutiny against his superior, and as a deserter he joins a group of smugglers. Finally, when she turns her love to the bullfighter Escamillo, jealousy drives Don José to murder her.
