Aida was the opera chosen for the Arena’s first major operatic season in 1913, staged to commemorate the centenary of Giuseppe Verdi’s birth. More than a century later, this production deliberately looks back to those origins.

Its scenery recreates the historic staging associated with the first Arena performances, while the costumes draw inspiration from the designs of French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette. The direction also follows Verdi’s original theatrical indications closely.

Just five days after the final performance of the traditional 1913 Edition, the Arena changes appearance for a radically different interpretation.

Stefano Poda’s Aida presents Verdi’s story through a contemporary visual language dominated by light, reflective surfaces, transparency and striking geometric forms.

Poda is responsible not only for the direction but also for the scenery, costumes, lighting and choreography, creating a unified visual concept in which Ancient Egypt is combined with contemporary art and high-fashion influences.

Often described as the Arena’s “crystal” Aida, this production provides an alternative for spectators who want the musical grandeur of Verdi but prefer a visually modern interpretation rather than a traditional reconstruction of Ancient Egypt.
