Gorillaz is a British virtual band founded in 1998 by musician Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett. The band is mainly composed of four animated members: 2-D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle and Russel Hobbs. Their fictional world is presented in the form of music videos, interviews and short films. In fact, Albarn is the only permanent music contributor, and Gorillaz’s music often collaborates with many featured artists. Remi Kabaka Jr. became the band’s producer in 2016 after dubbing Russel Hobbs for many years, and was listed as a full member along with Albarn and Hewlett in the 2019 documentary Gorillaz: Reject False Icons.

With Gorillaz, Alban broke away from his band Blur’s unique British pop music, and explored various music styles, including hip-hop, electronic music, and world music through a ‘quirky postmodern’ approach. The band’s 2001 debut album, Gorillaz, featured dubbing and Latin style, and won triple platinum in the UK and double platinum in Europe. Sales were boosted by the success of the album’s lead single ‘Clint Eastwood’. Their second studio album ‘Demon Days’ (2005) won 6 platinum times in the UK and double platinum in the United States, and gave birth to the successful title single ‘Feel Good Inc.

Throughout the history of the band, Gorillaz has performed live performances in a variety of different ways, such as hiding the live band from the audience’s view in the early stages of the project, projecting animated band members onto the stage through computer graphics, and traditional live performances Live bands visible on tour. The band has sold more than 24 million records worldwide, and was named the world’s ‘most successful virtual band’ by the Guinness Book of Records. They won Grammy Awards, two MTV Music Video Awards, one NME Award and three MTV European Music Awards.
