Which Aida Production Should You Choose?

All three versions present Verdi’s complete opera, but each offers a very different visual interpretation.

Franco Zeffirelli’s Aida

Choose the Franco Zeffirelli production for a luxurious and monumental spectacle. Golden pyramids, imposing scenery, richly detailed costumes and large ensemble scenes create the traditional epic atmosphere many visitors associate with Aida at the Arena di Verona.

Selected 2026 dates also feature internationally recognised singers. Roberto Alagna is scheduled as Radamès on 9 and 23 August, Anna Netrebko as Aida on 30 August and Jonas Kaufmann as Radamès on 10 September. Casts vary by date and should be checked before booking.

Aida 1913

Choose the 1913 edition for the most historic Arena experience. The production pays tribute to the staging created for the amphitheatre’s first opera season and preserves a classical visual interpretation of Ancient Egypt.

It is the longest of the 2027 versions, with an estimated duration of approximately 3 hours and 40 minutes, including two intervals.

Stefano Poda’s Crystal Aida

Choose the Stefano Poda edition for a modern and visually innovative interpretation. Transparent structures, reflective surfaces, contemporary costumes and carefully designed lighting transform the Arena into a futuristic Egyptian world.

The estimated duration is approximately 3 hours and 10 minutes, including one interval.

The Story of Aida

Aida is an Ethiopian princess who has been captured and forced to live as a slave in Egypt. She secretly loves the Egyptian commander Radamès, but he is also desired by Amneris, daughter of the Pharaoh.

When war begins between Egypt and Ethiopia, Radamès is chosen to lead the Egyptian army. Aida must decide between her love for him and her loyalty to her father and homeland. Their relationship becomes trapped between war, political duty, jealousy and betrayal, leading to one of opera’s most moving final scenes.

Famous Music from Verdi’s Aida

The opera includes some of Verdi’s most celebrated music, including Radamès’s aria Celeste Aida, Aida’s reflective O patria mia and the immense Triumphal March.

The triumphal scenes are particularly suited to the Arena di Verona, where the vast stage can accommodate a large chorus, orchestra, dancers and ceremonial processions.

Choosing Your Aida Arena di Verona Seats

Central stalls provide a closer view of the singers, costumes and dramatic interaction between Aida, Radamès and Amneris.

Elevated sectors offer a broader perspective over the complete production. They can be especially suitable for Aida because the opera contains enormous scenic structures, large choruses and carefully arranged procession scenes.

For the Stefano Poda production, an elevated central position can help visitors appreciate the lighting and complete visual composition. For the Zeffirelli and 1913 editions, both close and panoramic positions work well, depending on whether you prioritise the singers or the monumental staging.
