The Story of Swan Lake

Prince Siegfried, pressed to choose a bride, follows a flight of swans to a moonlit lake and finds Odette — a princess transformed into a swan by the sorcerer Rothbart, free to take human form only at night. He swears the oath of love that could break the spell; at the palace ball Rothbart presents his own daughter Odile, the black swan, in Odette’s likeness, and the deceived prince seals the tragedy. The dual Odette/Odile role, one ballerina as both white and black swan, remains one of the great tests in ballet.

Tchaikovsky’s First Ballet

Tchaikovsky wrote Swan Lake as his first ballet score, premiered in Moscow in 1877; the version danced today descends from the 1895 St Petersburg staging by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, created after the composer’s death. Its themes — the swan theme above all — are among the most recognised music ever written for dance.
