About Verdi’s Nabucco

First performed in Milan in 1842, Nabucco was the opera that established Giuseppe Verdi as one of the major composers of his generation.

The story takes place during the conflict between the Babylonians and the Hebrews. Nabucco, the powerful King of Babylon, conquers Jerusalem, while political ambition, forbidden love and religious conflict divide those around him.

Among the central characters are Nabucco’s daughters Abigaille and Fenena, the Hebrew high priest Zaccaria and Ismaele, nephew of the King of Jerusalem. Abigaille’s ambition to seize the throne becomes one of the driving forces behind the drama.

The opera combines intimate rivalries with enormous choral scenes, making it particularly well suited to the scale of the Arena di Verona.
