Dalla was born in Bologna, Italy. He started playing the clarinet in a jazz band in Bologna at an early age and became a member of the local jazz band Rheno Dixieland with future film director Pupi Avati. Avati said he decided to leave the band after feeling overwhelmed by Dallas' talent. He also admitted that his film Ma quando arrivano le ragazze? (2005), inspired by his friendship with Dalla. In the 1960s, the band participated in the first jazz festival held in Antibes, France. The Rheno Dixieland Band won first prize in the Traditional Jazz Band category and was noticed by a Roman band called the Second Roman New Orleans Jazz Band with which Dara recorded his first record in 1961, and First contact with RCA Records, his future music publisher.
