The opera was commissioned by Rossini by Francesco Sforza Cesarini, manager of his family’s patron theatre (today’s Argentine Theatre), produced by his grandfather Zhu Sepe Sforza was built in 1732. In December 1815, Francesco Sforza Cesarini struck a deal with Gioraccino Rossini, who was 23 at the time, to create a cheerful and playful musical to be released in 1816. Performed at a carnival, but died on February 16, 1816, a few days before the ‘premiering’. However, Il barbiere’s performance happened anyway.
Rossini’s opera premiered on February 20, during the Carnival of 1816, at the Argentine Torre Theatre (today’s Argentine Theatre) in Rome, titled Almaviva or L’inutile precauzione (as a tribute to Giovanni · Pescello’s Barbiere di Tribute sign) Siviglia[1] of 1782), but was overwhelmed by a storm of protest. In fact, many supporters of the ‘old’ master Pisiello in the audience wanted the opera to fail. But the next day, at the second show, the night turned into an equally resounding victory. Rossini’s operas soon overshadowed Pescello, becoming not only Pesaro’s most famous composer, but also a figurehead in the opera world. For example, in 1905, the famous tenor Angelo Massini decided to end his career at Il barbiere di Siviglia.
Still one of the most performed theatres in the world, the opera is also famous for its Overture, one of Rossini’s most famous overtures. Now the opera Il Barbiere di Siviglia will be performed in the magnificent Arena di Verona so book your tickets to experience the Barber of Seville Opera at the Arena di Verona which will transform the Roman amphitheatre into the large garden designed by Hugo de Ana, enriched by the entertaining choreography of Leda Lojodice and characterised by striking gigantic roses.
